🍫 What It Is
- Made from raw cocoa powder and Theobroma cacao butter (cocoa butter).
- Contains an extremely high concentration of THEOBROMINE.
⚠️ Lethal Toxicity
- Lethal dose: about 1 gram of cocoa mass per kilogram of body weight.
- Theobromine reaches a dangerous peak concentration.
🧬 Canine Metabolism
The canine family is completely unable to metabolize theobromine efficiently.
Immediately blacklisted – no safe amount.
⚡ Rapid Onset & Symptoms
- Onset is rapid – within hours.
- Tonic seizures (muscle rigidity, arching, loss of consciousness).
- Death follows quickly without treatment.
🆘 Emergency Treatment (Only Rescue Methods)
- Gastric lavage (stomach washing) – to remove undigested chocolate.
- Intravenous lipid emulsion therapy – to help bind and eliminate fat‑soluble toxins (theobromine).
- Supportive care: anticonvulsants (diazepam, phenobarbital), IV fluids, cardiac monitoring.
There is no specific antidote – lipid support is critical.
🛑 Prevention
- Keep all dark chocolate, baking chocolate, cocoa powder, and cocoa butter securely locked away.
- Never leave chocolate desserts or raw chocolate mass within a dog’s reach.
🐶 Dark chocolate is not candy – it is a potent poison. Even a small piece can kill a medium‑sized dog.
