⚠️ Eat with caution: Sesame (for dogs)
🌿 Basic Information
- Sesame belongs to the Pedaliaceae family.
- Contains about 50% oil.
- Rich in calcium, iron, zinc, and sesamin (a natural antioxidant).
✅ Potential Benefits
- Sesamin provides antioxidant effects.
- Dogs can digest white sesame seeds when properly prepared.
- Peeled, ground sesame paste (sugar‑free, salt‑free) can be given in small amounts to:
- Improve flavor of food
- Increase appetite
⚠️ Risks & Limitations
High calorie & fat content
- Each teaspoon of sesame = about 30 kilocalories.
- Daily limit:
- Small/medium dogs: 1–2 teaspoons
- Large dogs: double the amount (2–4 teaspoons)
- Excessive sesame can still cause soft stools.
Digestibility issues
- Whole raw sesame seeds are too small → pass through undigested, excreted in feces.
- Better absorption after grinding (into paste or powder).
Storage & spoilage
- Sesame oil goes rancid quickly.
- Seal and store away from light.
- Discard if there is any smell of oil consumption (rancidity).
🚫 Special Precautions
- Must confirm that sesame paste contains no xylitol or sugar – only pure sesame.
- Dogs with calcium concerns (e.g., history of urinary stones) should limit or avoid sesame.
- Overfeeding may still cause soft stools.
🐶 Best Use
Sesame is best used as a tool to induce eating (appetite stimulant) rather than as a regular snack.
Use sparingly and with caution.
❌ Not Recommended For
- Dogs with stone‑prone conditions (excess calcium)
- Dogs prone to pancreatitis (high fat)
- Any dog if the sesame product contains added sugar, salt, or xylitol
🐾 A tiny sprinkle of ground sesame can add flavor, but keep portions tiny and frequency low.
